Everyone-
A Windows 7 virtual machine is created and you can see it on the VirtualBox Manager window. It is noted that your virtual machine just created is not installed operating system, therefore, you need to install an operating system for it. Download a Windows ISO. Since we want to create a Windows virtual machine, it follows that we need a Windows installation medium. The easiest way to install VirtualBox on Linux Mint or Ubuntu is through their respective software managers. On Ubuntu, we can install it through Ubuntu Software.
I just can't get my iso to load in VirtualBox and keep getting 'FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted. I'm running Ubuntu 17.
What I've made sure of:
- Storage: ISO is mounted under 'Controler: IDE. Optical Drive: IDE Primary Master (have tried Primary/Secondary Master/Slave combos - nothing).
- System: Boot Order: Optical, Hard Disk, and no others checked.
- System: I have checked 'Enable I/O APIC'
Another thing to note, I downloaded the Windows boot data from Dell and saved on USB stick. I couldn't figure out how to use the USB stick to load Win7 in VirtualBox so now trying the ISO route. I used 'dd' in terminal to burn the files to ISO. I noticed the permissions on the ISO file are listed as root. Could that be the issue? Does the user I'm running have to be added? If so, how do I switch that?
I can't wait to figure this out and start using Windows in VirtualBox. Thank you so much for any help here.

Well, nobody answered and in the few days following I figured it out. My problem had all to do with the ISO. I thought dd copied over all the contents on the USB but wasn't pulling some of the boot files for whatever reason. I just searched again for an Win7 ISO and came across (https://www.pcsteps.com/45-download-windows-7-iso-legally-free-digital-river/). I followed the steps to get the ISO, attached to my Controler IDE, and bam... Windows began installation.
VirtualBox was always functioning fine, it was just the dang ISO. I learned a lot in the process!
For anyone hitting a roadblock and just can't get their Windows ISO to work, hopefully the URL above helps.
Good Luck!

The Windows 7 Home Premium (W7HP) installer persistently stalls about quarter the way through. This always occurs with the two different ISO files, whether mountinged as virtual disks or as DVDs, displaying this alert:

If the dialogue is closed, the installer reverts to the starting page. When I was originally installing W7HP directly onto the hardware, I seem to remember having to download some files and burning them to a CD which had to be inserted after the installation files had been copied to a temporary folder but before starting the installation. What's the solution?

Solution
The problem is caused by the permissions on the virtual machine folder. The Windows 7 installer is trying to find the virtual hard disc's

- In Nautilus or the shell, change the permissions for the folder (e.g. 'Windows 7') and all child folders and files to read/write for Owner and Group.
If the computer is at home or only used by you, you can also give rw to Other. - In the Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager, mount either the .iso file as a virtual hard disk or the actual CD/DVD drive using the passthrough option.
- Run the installer.
- When the wizard asks for the product key or activation code, skip to the next page (you have 20 days -- I think -- to activate).
- Complete the installation.
- In the Start menu of the running Windows machine, search for Windows Activation and enter your activation code.
